Chinese New Year Celebrations

The Chinese New Year, also known as the spring festival, is the most popular Chinese festival. The Chinese New Year 4705 starts on 18th February, 2007. It is the year of the boar. The Chinese celebrate the Chinese New Year with the occurrence of the new moon on the very first day of the New Year and enjoy the festivities for 15 long days. It is also an occasion of family get together and thanksgiving. During the celebrations of the Chinese New Year, Heaven and Earth, Gods and Savior of all, are given a tribute. In order to honor the forefathers of a family, a sacrifice is made.

Each day of the 15-day celebration is celebrated with much joy. On the first day, the Gods of the Heaven and Earth are honored and vegetarian food is taken by all. On the second day family members gather to pray to their Gods and ancestors. The dogs are cared for on this day. According to the traditions the sons-in-law pay their respect to their parents-in-law on the third and fourth days. The family members stay back at home on the fifth day or Po Woo, to welcome the God of Wealth. The Chinese visit their close ones and go to many holy places during the sixth and tenth day of the Chinese New Year Celebrations. On the seventh day the farmers display their farm products and prepare soups and noodles with seven types of vegetables. The Fijians on the eighth day eat together with their family members and pray to Tian Gong, the God of Heaven, at midnight. Jade Emperor is honored with special presentations on the ninth day of the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Dinners are arranged for the close ones on the tenth, eleventh and twelfth day of the huge celebration. Simple rice congee and choi sum are cooked on the thirteenth day. Arrangements for the celebration of the Lantern Festival are done on the fourteenth day which is held on the fifteenth day.
