1857

The Revolt of 1857 was the first important event that threatened the rule of the British Imperialists in India. It was the initial milestone in India’s long journey for the struggle for freedom. In the month of March in 1857, the Indian army at Barrackpore revolted against the British rule and this uprising spread in many other places. The British however, covered up the whole thing. The Sepoy Mutiny of 1857 was the first major effort to achieve freedom from the British regime. The revolution was the expression of anger and dissatisfaction towards the foreign government. After the mutiny the British parliament got hold of the entire charge of ruling the country.
1929
In the Congress Session of 1929’s December, Mahatma Gandhi conducted the Civil Disobedience Movement. This movement purposed at the complete defiance of the foreign rule and while this movement was being carried, it was decided that 26th January would be celebrated as Independence Day in India. Meetings took place all over India on the same date in 1930 with the hoisting of the Congress tricolor.
1942
In 1942 the Quit India Movement was carried out by the Congress with the passing of the well-known Quit India resolution at Bombay Session. The chief aim was non-violent extensive struggle for freedom. But the British Government arrested all the major Congress leaders before the movement could commence. The Congress was declared banned. Simultaneous uprisings took place all over India accompanied with the cry of “British Quit India”.
Indian National Congress
Allen Octavian Hume guided the formation of Indian National Congress in 1885. It became the foremost representative of the common people’s will. INC directed the Indians in their freedom struggle. The Congress organized its first meeting at Bombay in December 1885 chaired by Womesh Chandra Banerjee. The Congress went on arranging meetings every December all over the country. Formerly they followed the strategy of Petition, Pray and Protest. INC focused upon the requirement of providing Indians with supremacy in legislative councils and to check the Drain of wealth.
