Janmashtami History
On the auspicious day of Janmashtami the birth of Lord Krishna is celebrated all over the country. It is celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksh. It comes in the month of August/September or on the eighth day after the dark fortnight in Bhadon. Devaki and Vasudeva were the parents of Lord Krishna. But Kansa, Devaki’s brother, imprisoned his parents when he was about to born. The prediction of Kansa getting killed by the Devaki and Vasudeva’s eight child was the reason behind this. Anyhow, in the midst of a harsh storm Vasudeva took Lord Krishna to Gokul, immediately after his birth. There he grew up under the love and care of Yashodha and Nand.
The temples all over India celebrate Janmashtami with extravagance and high energy. Rasleela takes place in order to recreate the incidents of Lord Krishna’s life and his love for his beloved Radha.
On the auspicious occasion of Janmashtami people pray to Lord Vishnu in his re-incarnated human form of Lord Krishna. The idol of the Lord is being bathed right at midnight and is kept in the cradle. The occasion is marked with the performance of devotional songs and dances.
Janmashtami is the day when Lord Krishna appeared on Earth. It was an incredible event when the creator of this world himself appeared in a small village, in a part of India itself. The Lord appeared on this soil to help all the troubled souls who prayed to him for the relief of all their sorrows and he became the savior of all.
In few parts of India, mainly in Maharashtra, young people celebrate this day with the breaking of the clay pots of curd and butter hung at a great height from the ground. Human pyramids are made to get to the pots and then they are broken. This is done because Gokul, where Lord Krishna spent his early days, once generated large quantities of milk and in spite of this the villagers sold this milk in Mathura.
