People on different parts of the country celebrate Janmashtami by preparing different types of food which Lord Krishna liked. They prepare these foods to please him. Lord Krishna was very fond of milk and milk products. So the foods prepared for him on Janmashtami are made mainly of milk products.

  • Rice Flakes Kheer: In this Janmashtami recipe the rice flakes are first washed with water and then drained. 1 litre of milk is then boiled in a pot. The rice flakes are then added to the milk and it is cooked till the kheer comes to the desired consistency. Sugar is added to it. Then raisins, saffron, crushed pistachios and cardamom powder are mixed and served hot.

  • Besan ke Ladoo: In this recipe, ghee is warmed in a pan. Flour and rava are then fried in it with constant stirring in a low flame. The fire is taken off when the flour becomes golden brown giving off aroma. Milk, which has been mixed in a mixie, is added to it. Sugar, cardamom and essence are added in the pan. The ladoos are brought into shapes and after complete cooling, stored in an airtight container.
    Shrikhand: One of the most popular Janmashtami Recipes is Shrikhand. It is prepared by first tying up curd for one night in a cleaned muslin cloth. Curd and sugar are then mixed in a bowl. Sugar is allowed to dissolve for about half an hour. The mixture is then beaten for the proper mixing of the sugar and then is passed through a strong strainer with a big hole by pressing. Cardamom powder, dissolved saffron, crushed pista and almonds are then mixed into it. The mixture is then put in a glass bowl, garnished with crushed nuts and served after one or two hours of cooling.
