Harvest Festival

In Tamil Nadu, Pongal, the harvest festival, is celebrated in the middle of January every year. The date of Pongal does not change as the basis of calculation is the solar calendar. Pongal coincides with Makar Sankranti in the North, Lohri in Punjab, Bhogali Bihu in Assam and Bhogi of Andhra Pradesh. A unique event of thanksgiving to God, Sun, Earth and the Cattle is celebrated during Pongal in gratitude of a good harvest. All the families get together to celebrate and share their happiness and harvests among themselves. The first day of the Tamil month Thai is celebrated as “Pongal Day” after Margazhi, the wet month.

The meaning of Pongal is the boiling over of milk and rice during Thai, suggesting the beginning of prosperity. The celebrations indicate the gleaning of the harvest and the departure of the southeast monsoons in South India. The yearly cycle of seasons marks the advent of a new season with the cleaning up of all the dirt and greeting the new harvest.
Pongal is the time to celebrate and enjoy the new changes. The Sun is worshipped on the first day of Pongal, indicating its shift from Cancer to Capricorn. The harvest of all the crops counts on a good amount of rainfall. So the Sun God and the God of Rain are being called forth during the celebration of Pongal. The fourth day of the occasion is meant for outdoor pleasure trips. For this reason in the other parts of the country this festive season is known as Makar Sankranti (Sanskrit Makar - Capricorn).
