About Christmas

History
The story of Christmas initiates with the birth of Jesus Christ in Bethlehem in 350 A.D. Christ was born on the 25th of a month that is not exactly known. December 25th was announced as the official date of celebrating Christmas by Pope Julius I.

Winter Solstice was always celebrated by the members of the pagan order. During Winter Solstice the days are shortest and the nights are longest, a time of festivities, drunkenness and sin. December 25th was celebrated as “The Birth of the Unconquerable Sun”, the time for the Sun to regain his control with the gradual lengthening of the days. The celebrations were marked with great festivity.

According to the Christians it was disgrace to honor Saturn and with the expansion of Christianity the Church became alert of the continuing practice of Saturnalia. A decision was finally made to celebrate an occasion in order to honor Christ. The Church was finally successful to shift the celebrations and attentions from Saturnalia to Christmas. Although in the period before the American Civil War, North and South held different views on the issue of Christmas, Christmas traditions spread all over America in the post war period.
Santa Claus
Santa Claus living near the North Pole is the source of all the Christmas presents gifted to all the children all over the world. Santa Claus is presented conventionally as a kind man dressed in a red suit trimmed with white fur having a round belly, a pair of spectacles and a white long beard.

Christmas Tree
A tree played a traditional role of being present in the winter celebrations as in the pagan festivals for many centuries. The royal people of England popularized the tree by decorating the first Christmas tree in Windsor Castle in1841. Christmas trees were earlier decorated with nuts, cookies, candles, colored popcorn and apples. With the invention of electricity helped in spreading the use of Christmas trees during the Christmas celebrations.

Christmas Celebrations
Christmas celebrated all over the world, is the most significant festival of the Christians. Members of other communities of the world also celebrate Christmas as the time for merrymaking and gift giving. Streets, markets, shops and homes become richly decorated. Santa Claus and Christmas trees are seen all around. All the family members gather with the spirit of celebration and festivity to share happiness, joy and beautiful gifts.
