History of Holi

With the arrival of the March winds and departure of winter, spring begins to set in India. The festive season of Holi greets the dazzling summer days. The winter crops are harvested and the farmer is happy. Around the month of February or March on the full moon in Phalgun we celebrate the festive season of Holi.

The history of Holi dates back to the time of Mahabharata. Holi is associated with the legendary story of King Hiranyakashipu which signifies the triumph of virtue over vice and dedication exceeding desire. The King was a ruthless ruler who urged for supreme power and wanted to be treated like a God. But the King’s son Prahlad disobeyed his father. He was a keen devotee of Lord Vishnu.

The arrogant King was angry for Prahlad’s behaviour and determined to punish him. Prahlad asked Holika, his sister for her aid. It is told that Holika was resistant to fire and would not be ever burnt by fire. The King ordered Holika to sit on the central part of a bonfire carrying Prahlad on her lap. But Prahlad’s prayer and devotion to Lord Vishnu saved him, burning Holika to ashes. To commemorate this legend, on every eve of Holi huge bonfires are made all over the country, mainly in Bihar and North India.
The legend of Holi is also linked with Lord Krishna and Radha. Lord Krishna’s stories of wooing Radha in Vrindavan and the pranks that he played on the Gopis also mark the celebration of Holi. Lord Krishna has always been idealized as a young mischievous lover and his passion for Radha are induced in the spirit of Holi. The hamlets of Vrindavan, Barsana and Gokul depict Krishna and Radha making them live playing mischievous pranks.

Holi is the celebration of Krishna and Radha’s immortal love. It is a teasing, loving view of passions and colors. The scenes of their love I captivated and expressed in the Holi songs.
