The National Park protects the coral reefs
Los Roques National Park is home to 140 Molluscan species, 61 coral species, 60 species of sponges, 200 crustacean species, and 280 species of fish.


You get to see as many as 92 species of birds. Among them, there are many migratory birds too.

Earlier fishing was the main activity on these Caribbean islands. Of late the local people have actively participated in tourism activities. Moreover, few lodges present inside the national park were accessible and bought by ones who could afford them.


Currently, there are more than 50,000 tourists traveling to this part of the globe every year. Several inns and lodges have come up in close proximity to the Los Roques National Park. The local people are doing brisk business. The local inns are referred to as “posadas”. Adjoining areas of Gran Roque have more than 1500 residents and is increasing with every passing year.


Tourism has also given rise to employment in Los Roques. People belonging to the age group 18 to 70 years are the ones that are employed directly or indirectly in the tourism industry.
